STOCKHOLM: TThe
Island Capital between Lake Mälar and the Baltic
|
 |
Founded
around 1250, Sweden’s capital is situated on several islands
and peninsulas between Lake Mälar and the Baltic Sea.
Stockholm is the seat of the government and parliament.
At the same time, numerous theatres, libraries, and academies, a
large number of top museums, the Royal Opera and
the Nobel Institute make this metropolis the cultural
centre of Sweden.
STOCKHOLM: SIGHTSEEING |
 |
You
should start your city stroll in the old town district of Gamla
Stan, where the houses and cobbled lanes convey a lively
impression of old Stockholm. You will find some
of the city’s most beautiful churches here: Storkyrkan,
Riddarholmskyrkan and the German baroque church
Tyska kyrkan. Visit the Royal Castle
with its magnificent halls, the Crown Jewels and the Palace Museum.
Stortorgert is the name of the city’s central market place.
The centre of the square is decorated by a fountain house from the
late 18th century. Every December, stalls are erected here for the
Christmas Market. Finish off your tour on the observation platform
of the 155 metre Television Tower and enjoy the unique view.

STOCKHOLM: SHOPPING |
 |
The
main streets Österlanggatan and Västerlanggatan
are pedestrian zones in which boutiques, handicraft stores and antique
shops invite you to window shop.
Västerlanggatan, which begins at the parliament
buildings, is the liveliest street in the city and is lined
with restaurants, bars and clubs. There are still plenty of things
going on here late into the night. Stockholm’s most famous
meeting place is the Café Opera in Kungsträdgarden..
You can go on numerous excursions with the passenger ships of the
Stockholm shipping companies. From the Town Hall,
you can take a trip to Drottningholm Castle, which
is situated on a small island in Lake Mälar.
Our tip: a picturesque tour to the skerries with a stop at the popular
holiday resorts of Sandhamm, Saltsjöbaden
and Vaxholm.
