HELSINKI: The drawing board metropolis |
 |
The
regularly and generously planned Finnish capital
was designed on a drawing board and this gives it an unmistakable
profile. Even while still under Russian rule, Helsinki
was the cultural and scientific centre of the country and it has
remained so to this day. Because of the city’s colourful history,
traces of the different cultural influences can still be seen clearly
everywhere: in the architecture, the culture, the range of goods
on offer and in the gastronomy.
HELSINKI: SIGHTSEEING |
 |
You
should start your tour at Senate Square and visit
the city’s most famous landmark, the cathedral with its broad
exterior staircase. You will also find the Monument to Tsar
Alexander II here, along with the Government and University
buildings. You should then visit the National Museum on Mannerheimintie
and the main railway station, an architectural feature of the city.
|
HELSINKI: SHOPPING |
 |
Souvenirs
such as pottery, glassware, jewellery and furniture are available
in the shopping streets Iso Roobertinkatu, Pohjoisesplanadi,
Kaisaniemenkatu and Fredikinkatu. Our tip: You should also pay a
visit to the Kauppatori Market at the harbour!
|
HELSINKI: NIGHT OUT |
 |
There
are numerous bars and restaurants all around Senate Square at the
heart of Helsinki, and there is plenty to see and do here
until late at night – especially in summer. Helsinki is also
a vibrant cultural centre, however, with three symphony orchestras
and a new opera house.
|
HELSINKI: EXCURSIONS / DAY OUT |
 |
The
towns of Espoo and Vantaa are
popular excursion destinations in the vicinity. You will also find
numerous historical churches here along with stately homes and modern
structures built by famous Finnish architects of the 20th
century.
