Warsaw
– World Cultural Heritage Site on the Vistula
|
 |
Warsaw
has been the capital city of Poland and an important cultural centre
for four hundred years. In recent years, this metropolis with its
2 million inhabitants has developed into one of the most interesting
cities in Eastern Europe. The oldest and most beautiful part of
the city on the Vistula is the Old Town district of Warsaw, which
has been declared a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO.
Sightseeing
You should start your tour at the Rynek Starego Miasta Market
Square. It is surrounded by houses and buildings from the
16th and 17th centuries and the classicistic Royal Castle
is only a few minutes’ walk away. This is where the so-called
Royal Way – Warsaw’s main attraction – starts
and runs all the way through to the gates of the baroque Wilanów
Palace. The Royal Way is lined by magnificent palaces,
imposing churches, mansions and monuments. Finish off your tour
in Lazienki Park and visit the palace which is built on an artificial
island.
